![]() ![]() However, the player does get credit for killing resurrected monsters, so in levels containing an arch-vile the KILLS percentage displayed at the end may exceed 100%.Īrch-viles are the fastest monsters in the game except for charging lost souls, almost 50% quicker than even the cyberdemon. This resurrecting power makes them top priority to kill in battle, to stop them from reviving defeated monsters and forcing the player to spend extra precious ammunition. They also cannot resurrect corpses that were placed on map by the level designer. They can resurrect all monsters that leave corpses except cyberdemons, spiderdemons, Commander Keens, and other arch-viles. The arch-vile has the power to resurrect other, lower-level monsters that they come across. Moving out of the demon's sight does not cause the arch-vile to stop its attack it always goes through the full sequence unless it flinches after being hit by a third party. The blast occurs near the end of the spell. This attack will always hit the enemy as long as there is a line of sight between the arch-vile and the target by the moment when the explosion happens, and can be avoided by staying out of the its line of sight at that moment, which is usually relatively easy since it takes the arch-vile almost two full seconds to do one attack, from when it first calls the fire to when it actually sends out the blast. ![]() They then hunch over and clasp their hands together, causing the fire to erupt, usually sending the enemy flying into the air, while causing up to 90 points in damage. These monsters can take a considerably high amount of damage (700 hit points, the fourth highest in the game), and their attack consists of a unique ability to immolate their enemies in flames by raising their arms up and summoning fire upon the targeted foe, regardless of range (though they will not use their attack from more than 1088 map units away unless hurt). When killed, it utters an anguished cry as its body seems to fall apart, collapsing in on itself, leaving a bloody heap of dismembered body parts. Their ability to revive can really change the battlefield in a moment's notice and is probably their greatest strength if they have access to a lot of corpses, but the best thing to do is to not panic and simply focus on the Vile, they are the highest priority target in most situations.Upon spotting the player, the arch-vile emits a high-pitched, distorted laugh. Their speed is definitely a factor in making you waste ammo, they are very twitchy, I have the same issue with Revenants who while much weaker at 300 HP are deceivingly dangerous since they can roll an 80 damage missile if you're very unlucky. There's a trick to making their attack only do 20 damage (cancelling out the blast radius damage) by standing near a raised but still low sector (e.g a table or low wall), but I always forget how to exploit it and it may not always be available to you. ![]() The rocket launcher I feel is the best and fastest way to dispose of an Archvile outside of just obliterating it with a BFG. The pain chance is indeed very low at only 10 compared to a Cyberdemon's 20, Spiderdemon's 40, and Hell Noble's 50, and is a hard factor to take into account on whether or not you will successfully interrupt them with the first SSG blast followed by a second, so I'll usually second guess myself by playing it safe and seeking cover when they are in the midst of their attack. The Baron is the strongest non-boss monster at 1000, the Archvile however is stronger than any other enemy at 700.
